I chose to study at Newcastle College University Centre, and the Energy Academy, because it was something new.

At the time, a lot of people were going into mechanical or electrical routes, but I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do. Renewable energy was getting big in the North East, so I thought I’d give it a try - and it’s carried on from there.

There were lots of highlights, especially the big practical projects we worked on at the Energy Academy.

We used to take apart wind turbines in the workshop and put them back together, and I even used one as part of my dissertation. That hands-on experience made it really exciting and different from just classroom learning.

The staff were also brilliant. If you needed help, they’d stay back with you and support you with your work. I’m still in touch with some of them now.

The people in general - both staff and students - were great. There was a really supportive environment and no one stood out in a negative way.

I work as a QHSE Coordinator at Shepherd Offshore.

My day-to-day role is mainly focused on health and safety. I carry out risk assessments, make sure procedures are being followed, and oversee safety across large projects.

A big part of the job is making sure everyone is working safely and that no one gets hurt, especially on large-scale engineering work.

I developed a lot of transferable skills during my degree.

Team building was a big one - getting to know new people and working with different groups. Communication is really important in my role, and that’s something I built up while studying.

Problem-solving is also key. In the energy sector, things can change quickly, so you need to stay on your toes and respond to issues as they happen.

When I graduated, I was actually already working with Shepherd Offshore on an apprenticeship.

They have a strong relationship with the College and had approached the Energy Academy looking for strong candidates. I applied, got the role, and I’ve been there ever since.

I’ve now been there for two years and can see it as my future career. I love it!

The relationship between the college and companies like Shepherd Offshore is really strong.

They actively invest in the Energy Academy and support its development, which creates real opportunities for students coming through. That connection played a big part in me getting into my role.

With renewable energy continuing to grow in the North East - especially in offshore and engineering sectors - having those direct links to industry is really important. It helps students understand what employers are looking for and gives them a clearer pathway into careers.

It’s good to see that level of investment and collaboration, not just for the college but for the wider region as well.

Take every opportunity that comes your way.

Even something small that you might think isn’t for you at the time could lead to something bigger later on. Just try to say yes to as much as you can and see where it takes you.
