More about the course

This course ensures that you are well prepared to make a difference in the scientific industry. It also allows you to progress straight onto the second year of the FdSc in Applied Science.

During this one year course, you will develop your understanding of biology and chemistry fundamentals whilst gaining an appreciation of healthcare systems and technologies.

You will also delve into organic and inorganic chemistry, the theoretical and practical application of analytical chemistry, at the same time as studying how matter behaves at the atomic and molecular scale in physical chemistry.

Entry requirements

64 UCAS points (in related Science subjects).

You may be invited to a discretionary interview.

If you are a current Newcastle College student and successfully meet the published Level 3 entry criteria in an appropriate subject[s], you will be guaranteed a place on this course.

Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade 4 or higher in GCSE Maths and English Language or the Level 2 equivalence (i.e. Functional Skills or Adult Literacy/Numeracy).

At Newcastle College University Centre we welcome applications from students studying new T-Level qualifications.

Work Experience

You will work towards Registered Scientist status by working with key staff who ensure they keep their industry experience up to date with industry visits and placements.

This degree is heavily enriched by local industry including activities such as trips and visits to different sized laboratories, as well as guest speakers from local companies (e.g. Proctor & Gamble, CPI).

Where can I progress?

Upon successful completion of this course, you could enter the workforce as a laboratory technician, healthcare scientist associate or medical laboratory assistant.
